is something the body soul never forgets”.

“Live more sustainably” – what does that mean?
I finally figured it out. For almost 2 decades, since the first ever global pow-wow (1992 UN Earth Summit) governments, bankers and back-yard gardners have been asking that very question. Big Business claimed it meant “sustain your profit!”, environmentalists talked about recycling and providing for the next generation, and you only have to look at Climate Treaties to know the rest of that story.
To me, as I find my own answers, it´s as much about sustaining a true awareness of ourselves, the fullness of our being, as it is about meeting our practical needs, our supply of food and materials, from sources the more close at hand the better, which in turn is about maintaining and sustaining our local community and our environment.
If I am offering anything at all here it´s this:
how do you make your “connection” with nature?
I don´t mean just a walk in the park.
Connection = communion = communication and common unity = community
It´s being with friends around a fire, sleeping under the stars, digging the earth, building with natural materials, baking bread in an earth oven, tapping the power of the sun, tree hugging or better – building a tree house for the kids!
You name it but be sure to maintain and sustain it, it´ll sustain you.
A Mirror for your Mind
Some key thoughts for you to ponder on …
The Environment is a Mirror of our Mind
We need only to look at our personal environment to know what state our mind is.
For our personal mind look out there at your reflection in your “personal environment”
Your physical body, your house and home, your garden or yard
extending out to your neighbourhood and community
For our planetary mind we look at our reflection in our “planetary environment”.
If you are one of those people who stresses about the global environment, don´t. Just tend to your own, it can have a huge knock-on effect. Like a contagious smile, a healthy home environment will touch a lot of people
)
The environment of nature is created by the same power that is expressed through our Creative Mind.
The same Creative Power, whatever you want to call the Great Spirit, Him or just “It”, is the same intelligent universal power that is in you, me and everything from atoms to stars.
Humans are custodians of the planetary environment. Not only are we not separate from it but we are at the top of the “chain of being” at least as far as the three dimensional world goes. The entire kingdom of nature from our back yards to the distant oceans and mountain peaks, all the way down the food chain to the molecules and atoms in flesh, crystal or flower comes under human care. We are the Gardners and CareTakers, the Earth is our playground and our Garden.
“Learn to play in the garden of the Gods” – a wise friend once counselled me. She was talking more about the world of thought and imagination than how to grow better fruit and potatoes.
The Environment is a quantum field from which all possibilities show up as manifestations of our creation. Humans liked to hide under rocks to save themselves from seeing how powerful we really are. Thoughts create things and thoughts end up being reflected back from our environment.
All Abundance comes through Nature from the Earth. Nature needs humans to tend to Her, not dominate her solely for our own ends, and humans are more fulfilled when we nurture and sustain nature. The best way we can do that is to follow Nature´s way.
Which of these best fits your way? I bet you can add some more …
Growing you own food * Hiking outback * Crafting things by hand * Foraging and learning survival skills *
Building or remodelling your home * Sharing help with neighbours * Recycling + reusing * Energy Alternatives
Where to start?
It all starts at home, with ourselves. Is that too obvious? Well if it isn´t we would still all be going around like the early explorers for whom the world only existed “out there”. There is nothing out there that isn’t in here and that´s where it all begins. We must get in touch with our own nature and it can start with a reasonably serious look in the mirror.
How is your life being sustained?
What thoughts are you putting in there out there?
Where does your food, fuel and water come from and
where does it go to when you´re done with it?
Do you like what it is doing to your body, you´re neighbourhood?
Where does the best food come from? Well, for example, when I was studying herbs for my family´s home medicine, a shaman once said that local plants are not 10 times stronger they are 1000 times stronger than anything you consume from outside your local environment. That applies to food too. The best most wholesome food is the food you grow or that grows in your neighbourhood.
Our Local Environment is where we reap the best supply – of everything.

The Art of Sustainable Living – in 5 Seasons
Our Creative Mind, like the Environment of Nature, is sustained through 5 Seasons.
The man or woman who is attuned to the natural cycles
will live in harmony and balance
and this will be reflected in their environment
Design your life for maximum productivity
To achieve full use of your Creative Mind to create prosperity from Nature
it is helpful to become familiar with the Creative Cycle of Mind and Emotion.
Our intention here is ~
to design our environment for maximum self-sufficiency, sustainability and productivity
– literally to sustain our lives by use of our creative mind to release the full potential of Nature.
The following is a short insight into the five element or five season way of sustainable living which I teach in my workshops. It is based on PermaCulture, Eastern metaphysics and practical Western Shamanism.

Wood is our creativity given full and free expression …
This is the season for preparing new soil and the planting of seed.
With our Creative Mind we experience this as moments of inspiration, the birthing of new ideas and the seeding of new ventures and projects. It is expressed in sheer busts of emotion directed wisely into some act of creation.
In the Natural Cycle with Wood we prepare building materials and make fire.
In the Creative Mind Cycle we give free liberating expression to our creative juices and with this we literally sow what we shall reap at the Harvest. How we grow and what we grow will be reflected by our income, our relationships and in our kitchen.
… It is the role of Clown or Green Man, Creator, Artist and Shaman

Fire is our heart connection …
This is the season of full action and growth, of flowering and fruiting.
In the Natural Cycle with Fire we witness the burgeoning of nature, tend to the roots and shoots, irrigate and shape the harvest to come.
With our Creative Mind we experience Fire in the way we encounter people and the resources we need in connection with our business or our social lives. The right people will show up for us at all times when we are receiving what we envisaged, trusted and believed we deserved and are ready to receive.
Since Fire is the element of Joy, laughter and Love then your expression of Fire is definitely revealed in how you experience your connection in all kinds of relationships with:
- Your family and loved ones,
- Your friends and neighbours,
- Your business community,
- Your humanity at large
- Your Soul community of Elders and Wisdom Keepers
And naturally, it goes without saying, how much we love ourselves.
… Fire is the role of friend, guide and lover.

Earth is our season of harvest and of rich reward …
It is the season of homely abundance, our receiving and our ability to receive and give of our worldly wealth and of course all of nature´s supply.
In the Natural Cycle with Earth it is how we are receiving supply, or abundance, in all forms – from the water in our taps to food, fuel and materials of all kinds and from all sources: not just bringing in the crops, our home-grown food and medicine from herbs, but everything we need to live, work and play.
With our Creative Mind it is how we are nurturing our ideas into being, to allow rather than force as we can too easily do with the Competitive Mind. It is about the giving of space and time to the helping of others through their challenges so they can bring their joy into the world.
The golden rules for creating a flow of natural abundance we know are
“the more we give the more we receive”
and “always give more use value than you take in cash value”
“Earth” is the role of the nurturing Mother.

Metal relates to our self-worth and self-mastery …
This is the season of taking stock, of completion of growth in preparation for natural inner changes to come.
In the Natural Cycle with Metal the life-force of nature retreats into the roots beneath the ground. On the surface there is a dying back, a de-ceasing of outer activity. We lay down our seed stock, burn or compost the waist, service equipment and prepare for winter. In our homes we will ready supplies and preserves, and maintain all supply utilities including the plumbing, power, heating. As a time to review our state of being it is wise to also take stock of one’s health, physical, mental and emotional and seek the means of mending and healing.
With our Creative Mind this is the time for life review. If the results that show up in our personal prosperity and our home environment are less than desirable then we must literally take stock, draw up accounts, revalue and appraise our beliefs in light of our progress and use of our Creative Mind.
… It is the role of Apprentice and Master, Elder and Teacher

Water is our life spirit …
This is the season of retreat from outer action, for inner growth and transformation.
In the Natural Cycle with Water it is the season of Winter, of purification of earth and soil, of allowing the life force to move as it will internally under and through the earth to be reborn at the Winter Solstice and to reappear in the Spring time as “Spring water”.
With our Creative Mind we seek out our connection with the Spirit, the Source of our Being. For wholeness and healing it is the time we take to retreat into ourselves but not so much to hibernate as to awaken to out true nature. This can be mere moments or days or even weeks away undisturbed, to allow and go within – to better understand the source of our joy that gives meaning to our lives.
… It is the role of the Witness or Observer, the one who sees the reality
Attune YourSelf to Natural Universal Cycles
So much is talked about the year 2012! … We know it is a time for waking up and waking up is about alignment! Natural cycles are ever present but it is our conscious awareness and willing participation with the cycle of creation that humanity is waking up to.
There are three cycles you can attune to daily that will definitely enable you to live more “in tune” and abundantly. Each cycle attunes us to one of the three realms or kingdoms – the earth or quantum field, the human and the spiritual.
